School of Ballet

Rejoice School of Ballet teaches children ages 4 through High School. Classes are held at four locations in East Nashville: Edgefield Baptist Church, East Park Community Center, Salvation Army, and Glenn Enhanced Option School. Ballet is the core curriculum and all students, except a few in the African Dance and Drum class, take ballet. Depending upon their level, students take from 1 to 10 hours of dance each week. After a student has studied ballet for three years they may have the opportunity to take modern dance, tap, jazz, jazz funk or Pilates. Classes run from September through May. In May there is a recital that all students participate in. After the recital students take exams that demonstrate their progress from year to year.

African Dance and Drumming

Rejoice School of Ballet also offers an African Dance and Drumming class which is open to all children. They need not take ballet to participate in this class. Auditions are held once a year to participate in the Rejoice African Dance and Drum Ensemble which performs approximately 12 times a year all over Nashville.

Understanding God Class

Rejoice School of Ballet students are encouraged to attend the Understanding God class taught by Pastor Beverly Robbins. This is a two year class open to students and their family and friends. The class is based on the book Understanding God written by Patricia Gruits. It is the basic teaching of the Christian faith. Students learn what it means to be a Christian through memorization, study and experiencing Christian sacraments.

Tuition

Students who have documentation they are on the free or reduced lunch program pay $10 a month for classes, dance wear, costumes and recitals. Other students pay according to a sliding scale. This policy makes dance affordable for every child.

Performing

All Rejoice School of Ballet students perform in the recital at the end of the year. Through an audition process, some students perform with the Rejoice Ballet Ensemble and Rejoice African Dance and Drum Ensemble.

Twice Rejoice Ministries has created an original ballet which our students perform in. In 2008 in collaboration with Creative Artists of Tennessee, Rejoice created a ballet, Growing Up Black in America. In 2010 Rejoice created an original ballet, The Little Engine That Could,  with twelve Rejoice students as the toys and two children in wheel chairs as the engines.

For the past six years Rejoice School of Ballet students have performed in the Nashville Ballet Nutcracker.

Tutoring

Although Rejoice School of Ballet is not a tutoring program our goal is for all our students to excel in school. When we become aware of a need for tutoring we make arrangements for students to receive tutoring for free through volunteers.
